Impact on education, health, and culture during the construction of the Maya Train

Abstract

This study analyzes the perceived impact of the Maya Train project on
education, health, and culture in the communities along the Camino Real
Campeche. A cross-sectional, multidimensional analysis of perceived
social impact was conducted using a non-experimental, mixed-methods
design. Two hundred and four residents were surveyed, including ejido
members, project workers, and merchants. The results show that health
experienced the greatest positive impact [36.8%], due to improvements
in access to medicine, medical consultations, and other resources.
Education registered 24.0%, related to the purchase of school supplies,
uniforms, breakfasts, and other items. Culture accounted for 19.6%,
attributed to the dissemination of information and campaigns related to
the train. The study concludes that the construction of the Maya Train in
the communities along the Camino Real Campeche had a positive social
impact during the analyzed period, with effects varying across different
dimensions. Longitudinal and comparative studies between communities
are recommended.
